Performance appraisal is the method of evaluating performance in sport to form an understanding of actions which will tell coaches, sports agents and players about objectives, optimize performance and aid development of skills and of team culture. Performance appraisal is used by many sports organizations, and the performance appraisal processes differ in detail from sport to sport. The key performance indicators, or KPIs, are those elements which are used to track and record performance. KPIs can be in the form of a performance index, score, percentile, the ratio of performance to a team’s average, value score, or average performance level. There are many potential approaches which can be used in performance appraisal, and we shall discuss some of these in detail below.
A great deal of time, energy and resources go into coaching sports, and this has the effect of diminishing the impact of performance analysis on individual coaching. Coaches often assume that since the competition is tough they have a license to push their players and get more. Performance analysis should inform coaching decisions, but not to be taken as an end unto itself. By providing coaches with performance analysis data, they can make better decisions regarding training and development, rest and rehabilitation, transfer of players between teams, selection of players and coaching staff.
It is important for a coach to have a thorough understanding of each player’s skill, fitness and physical attributes. When doing performance analysis, one must take into consideration the skills, fitness and attributes of every player. One must be able to integrate all of the relevant information into a working plan. A coach should have a basic understanding of the game, including technical aspects such as ball handling, shooting, ball control, defense, rebounding, etc., and basic movements such as dribbling, passing, shooting, ball movement and shooting. In addition, the coach should also possess reasonable understanding of the game mechanics.
The most significant benefit of utilizing performance analysis to improve coaching is that it provides coaches with critical insight that will help them build better basketball coaching programs. Many coaches make the mistake of choosing an individual player and putting a great deal of focus on their physical capabilities. However, the analysis shows that the coaches made a mistake in relying on these physical factors alone. Some players have very high potentials, while others may not be as talented or skilled. The importance of the analyst is that it helps identify areas for improvement.
Performance analysis aids in educating coaches about how to maximize their players’ strengths and minimize their weaknesses. The data obtained from the performance can reveal areas in which players need more time to develop. The observations of the performance analysts can provide coaches with inputs regarding drills and practices that can be done during practice to make these players more productive. These inputs also highlight areas in which the players need improvement. A coach cannot spend too much time on perfecting his players’ skills if he is making mistakes due to poor inputs. Analysis data also help coaches decide on possible transfers of players from one position to another, and whether to play certain players at a higher or lower level.
Performance monitoring is a continuous process. The importance of constant performance monitoring can be seen in how the U.S. professional basketball teams continue to practice even when their performance is not up to par. In fact, the practice is one of the most important factors in assessing the players’ performance. It is therefore important that the coach constantly analyzes the performance of each member of the team. This means that the players should be monitored to make sure that their performance does not drop below standards. Performance monitoring is therefore very important.
