Nuclear energy derives from uranium, an extremely rare non-renewable fossil fuel that has to be mined very quickly to keep it in operation. A nuclear power plant is required to shut down for a period of time every eighteen to twenty-four months, to remove all of its spent nuclear fuel rods, which become highly radioactive waste. Nuclear energy produces about 20% of the nation’s electricity. The waste materials from this process are contained in special repositories, called holding tanks.


The process of nuclear fission
